In 1959, following the Chinese invasion of Tibet, His Holiness The Great 14th Dalai Lama sought refuge in India, accompanied by thousands of Tibetans who initially hoped to return home. Today, our community faces an urgent imperative: preserving our rich cultural identity in exile.
The Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota (TAFM), established in 1992 as a 501(c) nonprofit, stands at the forefront of this mission. Under the spiritual leadership of His Holiness The Great 14th Dalai Lama, TAFM is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting Tibetan cultural and spiritual heritage.
Our new generation confronts unprecedented challenges. Language assimilation and cultural integration in the United States threaten our linguistic and cultural continuity. Young Tibetans, immersed in English-speaking environments, inadvertently drift from their native language and traditions.
Aging in diaspora presents another complex dimension. Beyond biological processes, our cultural perspective on aging—rooted in filial piety and community engagement—defines our approach to elder care and intergenerational connection.
Tibet Town emerges as a transformative solution—a dedicated space designed to reunite, revitalize, and reinforce our community's cultural fabric. More than an infrastructure project, it represents a living, breathing ecosystem of Tibetan identity.
Cultural Preservation: Create a comprehensive hub for intergenerational cultural transmission
Community Empowerment: Provide a nurturing environment for elders and youth alike
Educational Innovation: Establish platforms for holistic learning and personal development
